About the Project:
The Indigenous Resurgence Project (IRP) seeks to provide platforms, resources, and unique experiences to local Indigenous artists in the BC Southern Interior. We recognize that Indigenous art is diverse and ever-evolving, and we aim to support artists who push creative boundaries while honoring their cultural identities. Through exhibitions, workshops, and public art projects like this mural, we provide opportunities that help emerging artists develop their skills and gain visibility within the arts community.
One of the core beliefs of the IRP is that only an artist can define their own artistic voice. Indigenous art is not simply defined by any one style, aesthetic, or practice, but rather a vibrant and varied method of story-telling and self expression. This mural will be a public statement that Indigenous arts, in all its many forms, is thriving in the Kamloops area.
Project Details:
The selected artist will create a temporary indoor mural reflecting the themes of resurgence, community, and Indigenous presence.
The mural will be installed and displayed in the entrance to the Stínesten Gallery at 140 Laburnum Street in Kamloops.
The project timeline will be finalised in collaboration with the selected artist, aiming to be completed by the gallery opening in summer 2025.
The artist will receive an honorarium of $1,350.00 for their work, provided by Indigenous Youth Roots grant.
